Full time
At TTM Rail, we believe our people are what make us great. We’re a proudly Australian, family-owned business that has spent nearly 30 years at the forefront of electrical and electronic engineering for the railway industry. We’re passionate about delivering leading solutions for our customers around Australia, helping keep railway systems moving reliably and safely, and we believe every person on our team plays an important role in that mission.
About the role
We’re looking for a Senior Electronics Technician with a practical, can-do mindset and a genuine appetite for solving complex technical problems.
Reporting to the Production Manager, you’ll be charged with taking ownership of new repair jobs as they come through the door, often equipment we’ve never seen before, sometimes arriving with minimal information. Your job is to dig deep into a component, work out how it functions, build our repair capability on the item, and deliver the repair service safely. The focus is mostly on reactive repair and maintenance, getting quality work back to our customers quickly and with a high level of service, while also providing technical input and support to the workshop team.
This role suits someone who has a genuine curiosity on how systems work and has the persistence and creative thinking to dive deep until they get a result. You'll be repairing items in a safe and structured manner, balancing control and traceability with ad-hoc invesigations and testing. You’ll work across a broad mix of electronic systems including control electronics, communications equipment, power electronics, monitoring systems, power supplies, protection circuits, embedded hardware and legacy equipment from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
What you’ll be doing
Fault-finding rail electronic equipment at PCB, module, rack and system level
Repairing, testing and validating electronic assemblies and systems
Understand how trams, trains and locomotives work at an intimate level
Reverse-engineering undocumented equipment to understand how it works and how to repair it
Taking ownership of new repair jobs from receipt through to a proven, completed and documented repair
Documenting findings, tests and investigations, and supporting the development of quality control documentations for ongoing repairs
Developing test jigs to enable efficient and repeatable repairs and testing
Diagnosing faults in control electronics, communications hardware, monitoring equipment, power supplies and interface circuits
Working with both modern and legacy rail technology
Supporting power electronics equipment, including converters, inverters, gate drives and protection circuits
Working safely around electrical systems, stored energy and rail operational environments
Improving test processes, repair methods and equipment reliability
Investigating failures and helping prevent repeat issues
Making sound technical decisions when schematics or documentation are incomplete
Suggesting practical improvements based on what you find during testing and repair
What we’re looking for
Essential
Strong hands-on electronics fault-finding and repair experience
Practical understanding of common electronic circuit topologies, across analogue, digital, control and interface circuits
Ability to fault-find without relying on perfect documentation
Strong diagnostic instincts and a logical, methodical approach to problem solving
A safety-first mindset, with good judgement around electrical hazards, isolation, testing and the discipline to follow safe systems of work
Good judgement around electrical hazards, isolation, testing and repair procedures
Someone who is curious, persistent and willing to dig into difficult faults, and who suggests practical improvements, not just carries out repairs
Exposure to power electronics, including thyristor, GTO or IGBT-based equipment
Highly regarded (but not essential for the right candidate)
Experience in rail, transport, industrial, defence, utilities or other critical infrastructure environments
A formal relevant electronics qualification or trade background
What you'll be using
Oscilloscopes, multimeters, insulation testers and signal generators
Bench power supplies and test rigs
High current and voltage test equipment (up to 4000A and 2000V)
Rail and industrial diagnostic equipment
Technical documentation, where available
Your own judgement, experience and problem-solving ability
What we offer
A permanent, full-time role based at our Epping, VIC site, five days per week
Genuinely interesting work, getting stuck into sometimes complex systems, with real autonomy and variety
Opporunity to on occassion travel to customer sites and work on customer rolling stock around Australia
The chance to be part of a business doing meaningful work in the Australian public transport and freight sector
A diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome
Access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Why this role matters
Rail systems rely on electronics that must work safely and reliably in demanding environments. This role is for an experienced technician who wants more than routine, repetetive work, can understand the problem, fix it properly, document the works, prove the repair safely, and leave the equipment better than they found it. That’s what keeps rail systems around Australia moving and helps TTM grow.
If you’re a hands-on electronics problem solver with a can-do attitude who respects safety and enjoys the challenge of complex rail technology, we’d like to hear from you.
