Sharp & Carter Legal are exclusively partnering with a leading Australian Law Firm; rich in heritage, to appoint a Head of Commercial – a high‑impact leadership role working directly with senior executives.

This is an opportunity to step into a strategic, enterprise‑facing position, shaping commercial performance across a complex, high‑volume legal practice.

Your role

Reporting to senior leadership, you will act as a trusted commercial partner to the C‑suite and practice leaders, combining insight, operational understanding and strategic influence.

You will play a critical role in driving profitability, improving operational performance, enabling data‑led decision making and supporting the delivery of a firm‑wide value creation strategy. This role is wide ranging and the following are some of the key responsibilities:

  • Partner with senior leaders to optimise commercial, financial and operational performance;
  • Identify and execute commercial and operational improvement initiatives;
  • Analyse practice performance, including work in progress, settlement pipelines and productivity metrics;
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and long‑term planning processes;
  • Develop models, dashboards and insights to support decision making;
  • Influence resource allocation, pricing strategy and operating models;
  • Work closely with the Executive team and senior legal stakeholder on strategic initiatives and board‑level reporting; and
  • Support the embedding of governance frameworks, approval thresholds and documentation standards that meet both professional obligations and firm expectations.
About You

You will bring a strong commercial mindset, with experience operating in a professional services or similarly complex environment.

Backgrounds of interest include legal practice management, commercial finance, business partnering or consulting roles with strong delivery exposure.

Key strengths include strong analytical capability, the ability to translate complex data into clear insights and experience working closely with senior stakeholders.

You will also bring a track record of improving performance, profitability or operational outcomes, along with a proactive and solutions‑focused approach.

Prior experience in and knowledge of legal practice will be of assistance to this role – but we welcome applicants from diverse professional backgrounds.

What your role will offer
  • Direct exposure to C‑suite and executive leadership;
  • Opportunity to shape the commercial direction of a household name firm;
  • Broad scope across strategy, legal, finance and operations;
  • A role with genuine impact on growth, profitability and transformation; and
  • Senior‑level remuneration and benefits aligned to the importance of the position.

If you are a commercially driven leader looking to step into a high‑profile, strategic role, we would welcome a confidential discussion.
